MetroidVania. It speaks a good deal about how important both Metroid and Castlevania were to game development that an entire sub-genre is named after them. A first glance, even if it were a peripheral glance on a mobile screen under a midday sun, leaves no doubt that Dark Flame [Kickstarter page] is a game of such genre.
The project has been going on for more than a couple of years now, and while a lot of the initial phase consisted of personal investment from the developer he is now seeking additional funds to refine, fine-tune and improve the art of the game. While the game seeks an initial funding of USD 75,000 there are stretch goals going up to $280,000 (PvP) and something novel in my experience with kickstarter campaigns, social stretch goals: certain amounts of tweets and facebook interactions yield special bonuses for the backers.
Aside from the already expected backtracking and exploration-heavy gameplay in a MetroidVania game, Dark Flame will have a progression system and the possibility of augmenting your character and crafting spells:
Utilize the Pyre to modify the powers of your weapons and spells
Manipulate the unique level system to suit your style of play
Immerse yourself in the diverse storyline of Dark Flame where you struggle between the lesser of evils
Adorn powerful weapons and armor to customize your appearance
Discover hidden chambers and uncover dark secrets
Unlock unique talents and channel hidden powers
You can download an alpha build to see how the game is here, or take a look at the kickstarter page to see in length what the developer plans for the final build of the game.
